African Market Watch: Wed, 18th March 2015

BRVM [he Regional Stock Exchange, Cote d’Ivoire]: BRVM (The Regional Stock Exchange of eight West Africa) closed its trading session today, higher than the previous day. BRVM 10 index gained 0.27% to close at 268.47pts and BRVM Composite index gained 0.04% to 264.32pts against 264.21pts previously. The equity market capitalization was recorded at XOF 6 522.15 billion, Likewise, the traded value was recorded at XOF 812.95 million and total volumes recorded at 150 410 shares in 157 transactions. The top security by volume is Ecobank Transnational Incorporated, Togo with 133 860 traded shares and valued at XOF 6.025 million. On the one hand, top price gainer was Bank of Africa, Niger gained 0.75% to close at XOF 87,620 and top price loser was Movis, Cote d’Ivoire lost 7.45% to close at XOF 5,090. 

Botswana:
The Botswana Stock Exchange’s (BSE) domestic index lost 8.00pts (0.08%) to close at 9655.77pts (with year-to-year performance 1.54%) and foreign index remained the same as last previous trading day to close at 1571.11pts (year-to-date of 0.41%). The market capitalization recorded at BWP 415,481.06 million, the total volume and turnover were recorded at 9,528 shares and BWP 56,767.64 respectively. The market sentiment was positive today, as the market breadth (advancers/decliners ratio) with one advancer and zero decliner. Botswana Insurance Holding Limited gained BWP 0.02 to close at BWP 12.21. All other share prices remained unchanged compare to previous trading day.

Egypt:
The Egyptian Exchange (EGX) indices ended on negative note, and market capitalisation lost about EGP 1.7billion to close at EGP 512.21 billion. The benchmark index EGX30 fell by 0.18% or 32 points to 9,484.08pts (it lowest in two weeks). Following suit, the small and mid-cap index EGX70 shed 1.38% to 541.96pts (the three-month low), and the broader index EGX100 went down 1.07% to 1,098.63pts. Today’s turnover amounted to EGP 512.206 million, while traded volume reached around 104.027 million shares sealed through 18,885 transactions. The market sentiment was negative today, as the market breadth (advancers/decliners ratio) berthed at 0.5x with 53 advancers and 111 decliners. On the one hand, topping the gainer price list was led by Arab for Development increased by 9.77% to close at EGP 2.81. On the other hand, the top losers’ list was led by Pyramisa Hotels and Resorts 16.22% to close at EGP 25.11. As an aside, foreign and Arab institutions were net sellers by EGP 15.8 million and EGP 2.9 million respectively, while national institutions were net buyers by EGP 17.6 million.

Ghana:
Ghana bourse closes on a negative note today, with the benchmark Composite index fell by 9.03 pts to 2,185.24pts; this brings its year-to-date to -3.35%. Likewise, the financial index gained 14.25pts to 2,177.22pts (-2.96% year-to-year performance). The market capitalization was recorded at GHS63.42 billion. A market activity measured by volume was recorded at 1,675,151 in sixteen shares and total turnover GHS 2.7 million. Enterprise Group Limited accounted for c.98% of total traded volumes. The market sentiment was negative today, as the market breadth (advancers/decliners ratio) berthed at 0.5x with 1 advancer and 2 decliners. Unilever gained 1.31% to close at GHS 8.50 while Enterprise Group Limited and CAL Bank Limited lost 0.64% and 8.70% to close at GHS 1.56 and GHS 1.05 respectively.

Kenya:
The NSE 20 Index gained 28.52pts (0.54%) to close at 5,342.36pts today. Likewise, Nairobi All Share Index gained 0.64pts (0.37%) to close at 172.63pts with total market capitalization at KES 2,410.25 trillion. The total volume of shares traded closed at 26.82 million as total turnover closed at KES 950.10 million depicting an increment of 23.64 percent and 84.21 percent respectively. The total volume of shares and total turnover declined by 17.97 percent and 30.67 percent respectively to close at 22.00 million and KES 658.69 million. The top mover was E.A Breweries with a turnover of KES 180.59 million, representing 27.41 percent of the day’s total market turnover. The market sentiment was negative today, as the market breadth (advancers/decliners ratio) berthed at 0.95x with 19 advancers and 20 decliners. Sasini gained 8.76 percent on its share price to close at KES 14.90 to become the highest gainer while E.A Portland Cement went down by 9.09 percent to close at KES 60.00 to be the highest loser in the market. Foreign buys closed at 36.15 percent of total turnover while foreign sales closed at 55.41 percent of turnover.

Malawi:
Both Malawi All Share Index and Domestic Index remained unchanged to to close at 14,917.67pts and 11,745.36pts respectively. Likewise, the foreign Index remained unchanged to close at 1762.13pts. Total market capitalization was recorded at MWK 7,509.83 billion and total volume was recorded at 10,000 in one transactions and total turnover of MWK 436,668. Furthermore, all stocks price remained unchanged.

Mauritius:
Both indices end in negative today, the Semdex lost 6.47pts (0.33%) to 1,961.79pts and the Sem-10 lost 0.73 (0.38%) to 370.32pts. The market capitalization recorded at MUR 218.11 billion and overall total volume trade recorded at 1.16 million and turnover on the market amounted to MUR 41.47 million, mainly geared towards NMH, MCBG and Rogers which together accounted for 75.3% of total value traded. The market sentiment was negative today, as the market breadth (advancers/decliners ratio) berthed at 0.5x with 3 advancers and 6 decliners. The three gainers were INNODIS Limited, The Mauritius Development Investment Trust Co. Ltd and Cim Financial gained 0.91%, 0.37% and 0.21% to close at MUR 55.50, MUR 5.44 and MUR 9.74 respectively. On the other hand, the topping losers chart were Bramer Banking (lost 4.43% to close at MUR 4.10), and New Mauritius Hotels Ltd (declined 4.18% to close at MUR 57.25).

Morocco:
Morocco’s benchmark stock index (Madex Index) declined by 0.83% to close at 10,340.28pts (7.49% year-to-date performance) with total market capitalization at MAD 520.97 billion and market activities as measured by value closed at MAD 224.43 million. Likewise, Moroccan most active share index (MADEX) closed at 8,489.46pts (fell by 0.89% compared to previous trading day). In term of sector performance, top gainers were Engineering & Equipment, Utilities, and Holdings sectors gain recorded at 2.54%, 1.19% and 0.75% respectively. However, top loser sectors were Forest & Paper (-5.97%), Chemical (-3.17%) and Construction & Building (-2.43%). The market sentiment was negative today, as the market breadth (advancers/decliners ratio) berthed at 0.4x with 9 advancers and 24 decliners. M2M Group  tops gainer chart at 5.99% to close at MAD 241.55 while Involys tops the loser chart by 7.80% to close at MAD 143.00. Furthermore, FTSE CSE Morocco 15 Index lost 0.80% to close at 9,248.10pts (4.85% year-to-date performance) and FTSE CSE Morocco All-Liquid Index dropped 1.07% to close at 8,733.92pts (8.35% year-to-date performance).

Namibia:
Namibia Overall Index gained by 0.05pts (0.26%) to close at 1,151.33pts and Namibia domestic index remained unchanged to close at 421.89pts. The market sentiment was negative today, as the market breadth (advancer/decliners ratio) berthed at 0.5x with 6 advancers and 12 decliners. On the one hand, topping the gainers list were African Oxygen, Standard Bank Group and NedBank Group gained 1.41%, 1.35% and 1.22% respectively. On the other hand, topping the price losers were Trustco Group Holdings, Paladin Namibia and Oceana Group lost 10.00%, 4.52% and 2.11% respectively.

Nigeria:
The Nigerian Equity Market continued to trade below the 30,000pts psychological level for the third trading session this week as the All Share Index (ASI) closed at 29,434.46pts after dipping 40bps on the trading floor today. In like manner, market capitalisation fell to a 17–day low after it lost NGN 39.8 billion to close NGN 9.8 trillion. Market activities measured by volume and value also declined 58.4% to close 188.3m units and 50.6% to close N1.6bn respectively. The Industrial Goods index emerged the lone sector gainer with 0.9%. On the other hand, the Banking index continues to lead sector losers declining 2.3%. Also, the Consumer Goods, Oil & Gas and Insurance indices trailed with 0.9%, 0.6% and 0.4 a piece. Market strength still negative (0.4x) today after 11 stocks advanced against 27 declining stocks. COSTAIN West Africa (+4.5%), OANDO Oil (+3.9%) and AIRSERVICE (+3.6%) led the gainers while the laggards were led by Africa Prudential (-12.6%), PRESCO Oil (-5.0%) and Ecobank Transnational Incorporation (-5.0%).

Rwanda:
The Rwandan Stock Exchange All Share Index (RSE ALSI) and RSE RSI remained constant to close at 137.33 and 234.63 respectively. Total number of shares traded 2.33 million representing a turnover of RWF 194,400.

South Africa:
The JSE was relatively unchanged today, with the All Share ending 0.22% lower to close at 52,187.48pts. Similarly, the benchmark Top-40 index declined by 0.19% to close at 46,181.04pts and JSE Industrial top-25 index lost 0.25% to close at 66,247.57pts. However, Financial index gained 0.16% to close at 44,871.63pts. The market sentiment was negative today, as the market breadth (advancer/decliners ratio) berthed at 1.9x with 134 advancers and 71 decliners. On the one hand, topping the gainers chart were Eastern Platinum Limited, Astrapak Limited and Peregrine Holdings Limited advancing by 12.36%, 7.50% and 6.60% to close at ZAR 15.00, ZAR 4.30 and ZAR 25.05 respectively. On the other hand, topping the losers chart were Cargo Carriers Limited, Digicore Holdings Limited and  Trustco Group Holdings Limited lost 10.53%, 7.50% and 10.00% to close at ZAR 17.00, ZAR 2.51 and ZAR 3.15 respectively.

Tanzania:
The Dar es Salaam Stock Exchange (DSEI) went up by 0.79% to close at 2,614.08pts and market capitalisation recorded at TZS 22,898.90 billion. However, the DSE TSI decreased by 0.09% to close at 4,751.14pts.Today, DSE recorded a total turnover of TZS 34.17 mln from 13,906 shares traded in 28 deals compared to the previous session which recorded a turnover of TZS 4,561.53 mln from 11,095,904 shares traded in 77 deals. The market sentiment was positive today; with six advancers and five decliners. Swissport Tanzania was the highest gainer of the day shoving up by 0.77 percent to close at TZS 6,560.00. Swala Gas &  Oil declined by 8.33 percent to close the day at TZS 550 to be the highest loser of the day.

Tunisia:
The Tunis Stock Exchange benchmark index (TUNINDEX) lost 132.89pts (2.47%) to close at 5,236.52pts (year-to-year performance of 2.85%) with the market capitalization at TND 18.07 billion. Today’s turnover amounted to TND 4.056 million, while traded volume 636,352 shares sealed in 272 transactions and 60 listed companies. The market sentiment was negative today, as the market breadth (advancer/decliners ratio) berthed at 0.1x with 5 advancers and 48 decliners. On the one hand, topping the price gainers list were Société des Industries, Manufacture de Panneaux and Modern Leasing gained 1.19%, 0.59% and 0.39% respectively. On the other hand, toping the price loser chart were Société de Fabrication,  Société Moderne and GIF Filters lost 5.97%, 5.86% and 4.82% to close at TND 25.38, TND 2.73 and TND 3.16 respectively.

Uganda:
The Uganda Securities Exchange All Share Index (USE ALSI) went up by 0.23% to close at 2,011.25pts with market capitalization recorded at UGX 27,429mn. However, the Ugandan Stock Exchange Local Share Index (USE LSI) lost 0.02% to close the day at 324.29pts. A total of 182,803 shares were traded indicating a decrease of 97.00 percent from previous trading day of 6.08mn shares. Total turnover came to a close of UGX 3.12 million. The market sentiment was negative today, as the market breadth, with two advancers and seven decliners. The two price gainers were East African Breweries Limited (2.30% to close at UGX 9,904) and Uchumi Supermarkets Limited (gained 2.43% to close at UGX 337.00). However, the top three losers were National Insurance Corporation, Kenya Airways and Nation Media Group lost 5.56%, 2.68% and 1.04% respectively.

Zambia:
The Lusaka Stock Exchange All Share Index closed at 6,114.77pts, down by 0.15% compared to the previous close of 6,123.99pts. The market capitalization was recorded at ZMK65.438 billion, including Shoprite Holdings Plc, and ZMK31.199 billion excluding Shoprite Holdings Plc. Trading was recorded in Zambia Bata Shoe Company, British American Tobacco, Copperbelt Energy Corporation, LAFARGE, Zambia Breweries, Zambia National Commercial Bank (ZANACO) and ZAMEFA. A total of 39,812 shares were transacted in 16 trades resulting in a total turnover of K64, 491. Price changes were recorded in Copperbelt Energy Corporation (gained ZMK 0.03) and ZANACO (lost ZMK 0.01).

Zimbabwe:

The Industrial index gained 0.07pts (0.04%) to close at 162.05pts, with total market capitalization of US$4.213 billion. Today’s total volume and total turnover were recorded at 672,975 (57 trades) and US$4.537 million respectively. The market sentiment was negative today, as the market breadth, with three advancers and six decliners. On the one hand, the gainers were OK ZIMBABWE (OKZ.zw) added a cent to trade at 14 cents whilst Padenga Holdings and Unifreight Africa moved up 0.10 cents to close at 9.10 cents and 1.60 cents respectively. On the downside, Pretoria Portland Cement lost 10 cents to close at 170 cents and ZB Financial Holdings dropped 2 cents to close at 3 cents. Likewise, Hippo Valley Estate and NMB Holdings both traded 0.50 cents lower at 48 cents and 3.50 cents respectively. Whereas, the Mining index shed 1.25 points (2.51%) to close at 48.54 points.
